NBC Blocked Ronan Farrow's Weinstein Report, Claims Former Producer

NBC threatened to ruin Ronan Farrow if he didn’t stop reporting on Harvey Weinstein: report

A former NBC News producer who worked with Ronan Farrow has claimed that the broadcaster attempted to impede Ronan Farrow from finishing his reporting on disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein's alleged sexual predations.

Now, McHugh is speaking out, saying that NBC attempted to bury the Weinstein story, with orders coming from "the very highest levels of NBC", The New York Times reports.

Sources have claimed NBC News general counsel Susan Weiner called to threaten Farrow after he had left the network.

This included his "wonderful producer" at NBC, Rich McHugh, whom Farrow said "refused to bow to pressure to stop, through numerous shoots, even when it meant risking his job". "There's no truth to that all".

"In August of 2017, after NBC News assigned Ronan Farrow to investigate Weinstein and supported his reporting efforts for eight months, Farrow believed his reporting was ready for air".

The news website did not provide details for what exactly the alleged threats were.

While The Daily Beast's upcoming story is hanging ominously over NBC News, Ronan Farrow's upcoming book Catch and Kill could join with the expose to create a brutal 1-2 punch. Weeks after Farrow left NBC News and went to work for The New Yorker, Weiner spoke to him one time for one specific reason - because the NBC legal department continued to field inquiries about Farrow's outreach to sources.

A network spokesperson contested that Oppenheim "absolutely" did not have "a conversation with Harvey Weinstein about the content of NBC News's investigation".

"We repeatedly made clear to Ronan and Rich McHugh the standard for publication is we needed at least one credible on-the-record victim or witness of misconduct", Oppenheim said.

McHugh said that, despite mounting evidence, "I think it's fair to say that there was a point in our reporting where I felt there were obstacles to us reporting this externally, and there were obstacles to us reporting this internally".

Once the story broke, NBC News employees were confused as to why their bosses had willingly let go of such an explosive story.

"I walked into the door at The New Yorker with an explosively reportable piece that should have been public earlier", Farrow said. Besides, this wouldn't be the first time that the Powers That Be at NBC News ignored or squashed reports of abusive, powerful men.

Farrow was working for NBC News as an investigative reporter and spent months digging into the long-standing rumors about Weinstein. NBC News also had first crack at the infamous Access Hollywood tape of Donald Trump and Billy Bush (the show's parent company is NBC Universal), but turned it down. He is now writing a book about his experience with the network, titled Catch and Kill.

It's safe to say that NBC News has a lot to answer for.
