Potential Tropical Cyclone Six Off Africa: Early East Coast Surf Outlook

Update: Tropical wave has 60% chance of becoming tropical depression

Update: Tropical wave has 60% chance of becoming tropical depression

When it becomes a named storm, its name will be called Florence.

A potential tropical cyclone is a system that's not yet a fully formed tropical cyclone but will likely become one in the next 24 to 48 hours.

It would be the third hurricane of the 2018 season, following Beryl and Chris.

The National Weather Service's Miami office said the system is still expected to deliver heavy rain across South Florida for the holiday weekend.

Potential Tropical Cyclone Six is expected to develop into a tropical storm early Friday.

Another area to watch, a tropical wave is moving through the Greater Antilles.

Conditions appear to be favourable for development, and a tropical depression could form over the weekend while the system moves west-northwestward near the Cabo Verde Islands and the adjacent Atlantic.

Sea surface temperatures have warmed from their unseasonably cooler status earlier this year and the dry Saharan air, which is known to discourage tropical development, is north of where this system is about to emerge.

Located about 2,573 miles west of Hilo, Norman was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 mph while moving west-northwest at 10 mph at 5 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center.

Although chances of formation into a tropical system are very low, enhanced rainfall across the state is likely. "This time of the season is also termed the "Cape Verde Island" season, due to the waves developing near those islands off the African coast".

"By Sunday and into your Labor Day, some computer models are hinting at the possibility of a weak tropical wave tracking near Florida", Campos said.
