Judy Murray criticises 'sexist' code violation against Alize Cornet

Alize Cornet receives code violation for removing her shirt

The outfit shift earned her a code violation from umpire Christian Rask who branded her action "unsportsmanlike", saying she had violated the World Tennis Association's rules.

Others were quick to point out the unfair gender split, with one person posting: "Busted for code violation Alize Cornet took 10 sec to turn top right way but Novac Djokovic can sit for minutes half-naked".

'We regret that a Code Violation was assessed to Ms. Cornet yesterday.

"We have clarified the policy to ensure this will not happen moving forward". However, luckily, she was assessed a warning only and there was no further penalty above a warning.

Many people, including some of Cornet's fellow players, blasted the decision at the Grand Slam tournament in NY as sexist, given that male players regularly change shirts on the court. They will not be assessed a bathroom break in this circumstance'.

Earlier in the week, the French Tennis Federation ruled that Serena Williams couldn't wear a black catsuit at the French Open. She realized that her shirt was on backwards, then took it off with the sole intention of fixing her mistake. Changed at back of court. Got a code violation.

The decision to punish Cornet for changing on court was wildly rebuked on Twitter, with Judy Murray - mother of 2012 US Open victor Andy Murray - claiming there are double standards at play.

A spokeswoman added: "The WTA has always been and always will be a pioneer for women and women's sports".

The WTA criticized the ruling but welcomed the change in policy.

"Alize did nothing wrong", the WTA said in a statement.

Former world number one and two-timer major victor Victoria Azarenka said she was pleased the USTA had apologised. Meanwhile I saw, like, twenty exposed scrotum sacs while on a New York City beach last week, and nobody had a damn thing to say about it. It can not develop anymore. No idea what it means disrespecting the game playing in the cat suit?

Although women have been paid equal prize money at all four grand slams since 2007, they still lag behind the men on their own year-round tennis circuit.
