The death toll in the Genoa, Italy bridge collapse rose to 42 on Saturday, as four more bodies were found.

Genoa's prefect's office could not confirm the reports by the Ansa news agency and other Italian news media that the bodies were found by recovery workers overnight.

One survivor of the Genoa bridge collapse was in his vehicle as it plunged 45 meters (150 feet) to the ground along with falling sections of highway and concrete.

Officials put the official death toll at 43, after the remains of Italian-Jamaican family of three - including their nine-year-old daughter - were retrieved from their auto.

"We won't stop. Our work continues in order to have the full certainty that nobody has been left under the rubble", he said adding that workers were making the site secure and helping investigations to establish the cause of the disaster.

Autostrade, which operates and maintains almost half of Italy's motorways, estimates it will take five months to rebuild the bridge.

But a number of families chose not to take part and are holding private burials elsewhere in Italy.

Some grieving families, however, had shunned the pomp-filled ceremony at Genoa's exhibition centre, angry over allegations that the state had turned a blind eye to the bridge's decay.

The 51-year-old Morandi Bridge was a key artery that linked highways to Milan and France, and authorities are wrangling over who should be held responsible for its collapse.

President Sergio Materella, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and Interior Minister Matteo Salvini are among the politicians who will participate in the funeral service at a convention center in the city, led by the city's archbishop, Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco.

Italy's populist ruling coalition launched the formal procedure aimed at revoking Autostrade's concessions on Friday.

Mr Conte confirmed on Friday that legal proceedings were under way to strip the motorway operator Autostrade per l'Italia of its contracts.

Genoa's chief prosecutor has said that between 10 and 20 people could still be missing under the huge piles of concrete.

Sobbing relatives grieved at a state funeral for 18 victims of the Genoa bridge disaster yesterday - with mourners demanding to know how the tragedy was allowed to happen.

It will be the company's first public appearance since the disaster.

Italy declared Saturday an official day of mourning across the country, with several funerals due to take place that day.

"I don't know those who have died in the bridge collapse but I wanted pay my respects regardless".

The collapse has prompted fears over other aging infrastructure in Italy and overseas.

It denied scrimping on motorway maintenance, saying it invested over one billion euros a year in "safety, maintenance and strengthening of the network" since 2012.

Autostrade is controlled by infrastructure group Atlantia, in turn controlled by Italy's Benetton family.
