The video appears to show Salah with a phone in his hand, and as his vehicle crept forward, he is filmed using both hands on the phone while he sat in traffic.

A spokesperson for the Premier League club stated that the club has alerted Merseyside Police following discussions with the player.

'We have spoken to the player also and will deal with any follow-up internally.

This is the moment Mohamed Salah was caught using his phone at the wheel in footage which has now been handed to police.

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah could land up in hot water after the club confirmed they referred footage to police over a recent driving incident while in traffic.

Salah is an icon on Merseyside, having scored 44 goals in 54 appearances during the 2017/18 season and leading the side to the Champions League final, and is seen as one of Jurgen Klopp's most important players. Such behaviour was on display during Liverpool's match against West Ham, when a kid invaded the pitch and gave him a hug before being escorted away.

Punishments for using a phone while driving can include a fine of up to £200 (Dh937) and six points on the drivers' license.

Upon learning of the video's existence, the team informed the local authorities who said via Twitter on Monday that it had "been passed on to the relevant department".

Liverpool Football Club has also released a statement about the footage.

'Thanks for letting us know'.
