Kavanaugh's role in President Bush's controversial torture policy and treatment of War on Terror detainees will likely be a heated issue in his confirmation process.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) announced on Friday that the Judiciary Committee will hold the confirmation hearings September 4-7.

He expects the hearings to last between three to four days.

He further touted the nominee as a mainstream judge with a record of "applying the law as it is written".

Grassley said the committee has received more than 184,000 pages of records from Kavanaugh's work as a White House lawyer and for his work for Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr.

"He's met with dozens of senators who have nothing but positive things to say", Grassley, an Iowa Republican, said in a statement. At this current pace, we have plenty of time to review the rest of emails and other records that we will receive from President Bush and the National Archives.

"Liberal Democrats don't need more time to review Judge Kavanaugh's record."

Grassley said his team has reviewed hundreds of thousands of pages related to Kavanaugh's time as a federal judge, calling Kavanaugh "one of the most respected jurists in the country and one of the most qualified nominees ever to be considered by the Senate for a seat on our highest court". Opening statements will take place on September 4, and the Senators will begin questioning Kavanaugh the following day.

On Friday, Schumer blasted Grassley's decision to announce a confirmation hearing as a "mad rush" amid the ongoing dispute over Kavanaugh's records.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) said Friday that he expected the Senate to confirm Kavanaugh.

August 9: After attorney William A. Burck vetted the initial documents from the Bush Library, the documents were sent only to the Senate Judiciary Committee members. Democrats now argue that Republicans are now trying to hurry a confirmation process shortly before the 2018 midterm elections.

Breitbart News' Ken Klukowski has pointed out that Kavanaugh's opinions have been in the public domain for years and Kavanaugh "returned the most comprehensive, bipartisan Senate questionnaire in the history of the Judiciary Committee". Of that small portion, only 5,800 non-substantive documents were released publicly.

August 2: Former President George W. Bush revealed he is working with William A. Burck - a right-wing political operative who served as a deputy to Kavanaugh in 2005 and is now the attorney representing Steve Bannon, Reince Priebus, and Donald McGahn in the Russian Federation probe - to vet which documents from Kavanaugh's record are released to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
