Alex Rogers spoke to West Ham News about the Premier League opener against the Hammers at Anfield today.

Liverpool handed a debut to two of their summer signings, Alisson Becker and Naby Keita.

The Reds boss chose to reference the plot of Rocky IV in his response to how his side would go about bridging last season's 25-point deficit to Pep Guardiola's side.

Captain Jordan Henderson used his programme notes to highlight that none of his team-mates were "satisfied" by reaching the Champions League final last season, which ended in a 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid, and that "standing still" was not an option.

"It was not a ideal start but really good and we extended a really good pre-season into the Premier League", he said. After last season's painful and horrid ending to a fairy tale Champions League run you'd think it would be hard for them to recover from such a heartbreaking end.

"We are the ones who have to do more, fight more, and that must be our attitude".

These were two of the biggest-spending sides of the transfer window, with Liverpool splashing out close to £177million and West Ham investing close to £100m, but only one of them looked anywhere close to a team. That's how it is, they know that and we know that and we have to be ready week in, week out for all the different challenges.

The Reds looked comfortable in what could have been a tricky tie against Pellegrini's West Ham who never really looked like threatening the debuting Alisson in the Liverpool goal.

Mane, who has now scored in each of his last three Premier League openers, and Salah, the league's Golden Boot victor last season with 32 goals, sealed Liverpool's victory in their first competitive game since they lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid in March.

Trent Alexander-Arnold almost doubled the lead five minutes later but West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski pushed his free kick away from the near post.

But just when it appeared Liverpool would be frustrated by just a one-goal advantage West Ham helpfully switched off on the stroke of half-time.

At the beginning of the second half Michail Antonio hooked over a corner but that was as good as it got for the visitors as Mane scored his second, benefiting from the absence of a warranted offside flag, from Firmino's through-ball.

Also note that, despite being in charge of Man City at the time, Pellegrini lost four of his six matches against Liverpool so they're a side he's struggled against.

Liverpool now have a full eight days to recover until their second league game of the season against Crystal Palace on August 20.

"In the end, it is serious but not that serious, so it's not that we need to be afraid that it will take him until whenever".

A double from Sadio Mane and one each from Mo Salah and Daniel Sturridge - with his first touch after coming on - saw the Merseysiders sweep aside West Ham at Anfield to make an emphatic statement of title intent.
