This Weekend Is The Perseid Meteor Show - Viewing Conditions Will Be Perfect

The show gets better further from the lights. More good news comes from the Moon!

Starting tonight and through the weekend, Shenandoah National Park will be hosting the "Night Sky Festival", with space-related activities, and a front row seat to a meteor shower.

According to NASA and Space.com, Earth will pass through the thick of debris ar around 9 p.m. EST Sunday, meaning that night and into the morning hours of August 13, promise to produce the best show for North America.

The summertime meteor shower, the Perseid, is set to peak August 11, 12 and 13.

Weather will be flawless this weekend to view the Perseid meteor shower. Nichols describes it as an annual phenomenon when earth runs into the trail of debris left by a comet.

Gianluca Masi, director of the Italy-based Virtual Telescope Project, told Express.co.uk the Perseid shower is something no astronomer would want to miss. By night, most of any rain will exit with remnant cloud cover scattered around.

Meteor showers are caused by dust breaking off of a comet. Find a comfortable spot with as a wide a view of the night sky as possible, preferably away from light pollution, and just relax, lie back and look up. The longer one looks at the dark sky, the more the eye will adapt to the lack of light and be more sensitive to catch the faint glow from the meteors.

During the maximum, or peak, Sunday night and early Monday morning, it could be possible to catch as many as 110 meteors in an hour, or almost two per minute on average.

According to Space.com, during peak hours people should see about 60-70 meteors per hour. Scientists from NASA also said that camping out in the country can triple the amount of visible meteors.

Will you be watching the meteor shower?

Head outside after 11 p.m., when the Perseus constellation is higher in the sky.
