The doctors treating DMK president M Karunanidhi have said that the next 24 hours were crucial as the 94-year-old politician's health condition deteriorated.

Supporters mourn outside the hospital after the demise of Tamil leader M. Karunanidhi, in Chennai, August 7, 2018.

His popularity rivalled that of J. Jayalalithaa, another powerful leader from Tamil Nadu whose death sparked a huge outpouring of grief.

The veteran of Dravidian politics was shifted to the hospital on July 28 from his Gopalapuram residence following a dip in his blood pressure and he was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit ever since.

On July 26, the hospital said Karunanidhi was suffering from urinary tract infection and he was being treated with intravenous anti-biotics and fluids.

"There has been a decline in the medical condition of DMK president and former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi".

Addressed as Mu Ka, Tamil abbreviation of his name, by his peers, Karunanidhi's letters to DMK cadres in party mouthpiece Murasoli and his autobiography-cum-commentary on contemporary politics Nenjukku Needhi, are the favourite reading material for his supporters. He went on to become the CM of Tamil Nadu five times. He is known to have a great memory too.

Speaking to the media, a DMK spokesperson said that the party will visit the residence of the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and move the petition on Tuesday evening. Karunanidhi is considered as the leader who has always been concerned about his party and its people. State honours will be accorded to Karunanidhi and the Tricolour will be draped over him, she said, adding a gun salute will also be given to the late leader. That's what makes him acceptable across generations of Tamils. It is an incredible achievement for any organisation, especially one that is as large as the DMK. Since then he continues to be monitored by a team of specialists, reported PTI. Both were bitter foes of Karunanidhi in politics. Throughout his impressive political career, Karunanidhi has won 12 assembly elections has been appointed the chief minister of Tamil Nadu five times. The alliance continued in 2009. Karunanidhi has never, in his entire life, lost a single assembly election!

He founded the first student wing of the Dravidan Movement- Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram and also started a newspaper- Murasoli on Aug 10, 1942. This has cost his party dearly.

He is survived by two wives and six children, including DMK working president and heir apparent M.K. Stalin and daughter Kanimozhi, a Rajya Sabha MP.
