California Wildfire Becomes Second Largest In State History

In addition, Cal Fire has been engaged in a clearance operation since the fires began to halt their advance; one of the fatalities recorded was a bulldozer operator engaged in clearing operations when his bulldozer slipped.

The Carr Fire fire has been blamed on the "mechanical failure of a vehicle", which caused sparks to fly in the extremely dry conditions.

"It's the embers, not the fire itself, that destroy most homes", said Steve Conboy, a construction expert whose company develops fire-resistant chemicals to apply to wood. The Ranch and River fires that make up the Mendocino Complex wildfire had grown to 283,800 acres by Monday evening, Cal Fire said in their latest update.

The Nevada County Strike Team, composed of engines from Ophir Hill Fire, Peardale Chicago Park Fire, Higgins Fire, Nevada County Consolidated Fire and Nevada City Fire is still assigned to the Ranch Fire on the Mendocino Complex. "That doesn't happen. That just doesn't happen", he said on Monday.

On Monday, another fast-moving fire ignited in the state - this time in Orange County, where firefighters battled the Holy Fire that expanded to more than 4,000 acres.

"It's unprecedented in these seven communities", Lake County Supervisors Chairman Jim Steele told KTVU, "having all of these shoreline communities evacuated, everyone is nervous about getting back in".

Sources: Satellite imagery from Copernicus (Sentinel-2), fire perimeters and largest wildfires data from CalFire, building footprint data from Microsoft.

"Evacuations are going to continue until is safe" Sheriff Brian Martin said Sunday, without specifying the number of people who had left their homes. Another large fire that is still now uncontained, the Carr Fire, is climbing the list at number 12.

The weather forecast for the week ahead is not encouraging: very hot and very dry, the ideal conditions for the fires to expand.

Fire crews from Australia and New Zealand arrived in California to help.

In a series of eyebrow-raising tweets President Donald Trump meanwhile suggested environmental laws - rather than climate change - was to blame for the spike in wildfires devastating parts of the west.

More than 14,000 firefighters and hundreds of U.S. army personnel are trying to contain the more than a dozen major fires burning throughout the state. In reality, there are zero reports of water shortages for any of California's ongoing firefighting efforts, and there are zero places in California where water is diverted to the ocean.
