US judge blocks release of 3D gun blueprints amid uproar

Nine states are suing the Trump administration to stop 3D-printed guns

Nine states are suing the Trump administration to stop 3D-printed guns

A federal judge has blocked the release of designs meant to allow people to make their own firearms using a 3-D printer.

Eight Democratic attorneys general, including New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to block the federal government's settlement with Defense Distributed that makes the plans available online.

Cuomo said he will pursue legislation to bolster the state's gun safety laws and outlaw private production of all 3D and so-called "ghost guns" that are untraceable and invisible to metal detectors.

"I am thankful and relieved Judge Lasnik put a nationwide stop to the Trump Administration's risky decision to allow downloadable, 3D-printed ghost guns to be distributed online", read the attorney's statement. They also sought the restraining order, arguing the 3D printed guns would be a safety risk.

Meanwhile, some blueprints are already available online, and it's estimated that the blueprints have been downloaded hundreds of thousands of times. But the real issue in the legal case is whether or not shutting down the site would be a violation of Wilson's First Amendment right to free speech.

Sen. Chuck Schumer questioned Trump - as the president's administration settled a case with Defense Distributed to make the blueprints available.

"We should be doing everything we can to make it more hard for criminals, children, and individuals with serious mental illness to possess a gun".

By providing the instructions, the company would be helping Pennsylvanians circumvent state laws requiring gun-buyers to be at least 18 years old, pass background checks and obtain licenses and permits for some weapons, Shapiro's office has said.

The arguments began in 2013 when self-styled crypto-anarchist Cody Wilson showed off the world's first 3D-printed gun.

"The judge's rule is clear", Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson said at a news conference.

The Seattle federal judge scheduled a follow-up hearing on the issue for August 10.

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he is "looking into" the idea, declaring it "doesn't seem to make much sense!".

Defence Distributed agreed to temporarily block Pennsylvania residents from downloading the plans after state officials went to Federal Court in Philadelphia on Sunday in search of an emergency order.

"I have a question for the Trump Administration: Why are you allowing risky criminals easy access to weapons?"

Some gun rights groups point out laws allow people to make their own guns now and say this isn't all that different.

Blackman said in an interview he was disappointed in the court's ruling and the judge's comment.

The rise of 3D-printed guns could provoke a new era of "untraceable" weapons - and gun reform advocates are scrambling to figure out what to do.
