The ban on smoking products must be included in public housing tenants' leases, HUD says.

The dangers of smoking are well-documented, but as Rumnit points out, they may not be the authority's biggest priority.

Smoking will not be allowed in or near public housing units starting on Tuesday, due to a newly-implemented rule from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

According to the ban, residents will not be allowed to smoke inside public housing buildings, or anywhere within 25 feet of a building.

More than 1,000 families live in government subsidized housing owned by the Flint Housing Commission.

"I think this will be one of the hardest rules to follow", Perry Rumnit, Jr., a NYCHA resident, says in a promotional video for the policy.

"There's been a lot of people since we started this discussion that have talked about quitting and some of them have already started that process", Muskegon Housing Commission Executive Director Angela Mayeaux said. Not only does smoking impact the smoker, but HUD is hoping to reduce the amount of exposure of secondhand smoke to others. The majority from heart disease. "There is not like good weather in the winter, so for them to have to go outside and smoke, that's a hard thing", said Bella.

Connie West, who is a Salisbury resident said she has to stand in the street to smoke and it's an inconvenience. To that effect, the encouragement will be underlined by stringent guidelines: Tenants could face eviction for violation of these rules - though first offenses will be forgiven.
