Each MacCoin design features elements from that time in history, nodding to art, music and pop culture, while the front-side of the MacCoin celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Big Mac.

Thankfully this coin is not digital, but rather physical, and its cost won't fluctuate.

In the mad scramble to join the cryptocurrency market, McDonald's have entered the fray with the MacCoin.

More than 6.2 million MacCoins will be distributed globally, including 50,000 coins in New Zealand.

There's no mention if South Africa will be one of the 50 participating countries, but the initiative is set to start Stateside later this week on 2nd August. The burger is made with two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a sesame seed bun.

The milestone for the Big Mac shows how much McDonald's and the rest of fast-food have evolved around it.

MacCoin, as it has been named, will be given to customers who buy a Big Mac.

Starting at the lunch rush on Thursday, customers can receive a MacCoin with the purchase of a Big Mac at 14,000 participating restaurants across the United States, McDonald's announced Sunday. They can use the currency the following day.

Though McDonald's has suffered losses in recent years - last week the company said customers are visiting its stores less often - the Big Mac hasn't really changed.

The MacCoins will be of five different kinds, each representing the last five decades of the burger. Plus, that way, if the entire economy were to tank, at least we would be able to eat Big Macs for years to come. "So we wanted a global celebration as unique as the burger itself".

He also shared how the idea of coin sprung up - The Economist reportedly started using Big Mac Index as way to measure purchasing power of worldwide currency, in 1986. Use #GeniusKitchen to let us know what you're sharing! The Big Mac was first offered in U.S. stores nationwide in 1968.

A McDonald's franchisee fretted in 2016 that only one out of five millennials has tried the Big Mac.
