Health Alert Issued for Wraps Salads from Walgreens Trader Joe's Due to Cyclospora Concern

Salads and wraps sold at major grocery chains may have been contaminated by an infectious parasite, according to a public health alert.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said this causes intestinal illness about a week or so after consumption, and can include diarrhea and frequent or explosive bowel movements. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue.

"All of the 25 product varieties are now out of date, produced from July 15 to 18 with the "Best By", "Enjoy by", Best if Sold By" or "Sell By" dates ranging from July 18 through July 23.

Del Monte Fresh Produce in June issued a voluntary recall of vegetable trays sold in six Midwest states, including IL, due to potential cyclospora contamination.

If you are anxious you have consumed a recalled item, contact a medical professional. A list of the affected products can be seen here and here.

Consumers may have already ingested the parasite, and it may be incubating without producing symptoms, the USDA said.

According to the CDC, the symptoms of Cyclospora infection can last anywhere from a few days to a few months. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

"Illnesses might not have been reported yet due to the time it takes between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported", the alert reads.

At least 286 people were sickened and 11 were hospitalized as a result of the May outbreak.

In a recorded message, Salinas, Calif. -based Fresh Express said the recall does not affect its retail salad products.
