Pierre Gasly took a strong sixth for Toro Rosso, from the same place on the grid after excelling in qualifying, ahead of Haas driver Kevin Magnussen. But Vettel used DRS to sweep past Valtteri Bottas, into Turn 1.

Driver of the day - Lewis Hamilton Two wins in a week for Hamilton - and two driver of the days. McLaren managed to salvage four points from an otherwise disappointing weekend after Fernando Alonso went long on his first stint and benefitted from an overcut compared to the cars around him.

Lap 51: Vandoorne pulls over with a broken gearbox.

Mercedes were better on the wet track, no longer struggling for grip, and Valtteri Bottas was able to come in second behind his teammate and world championship leader, 0.260 seconds behind to be exact. "Tomorrow I will have a fight on my hands", said Ricciardo.

With the two Mercedes leading the way, Hamilton started to ease a lead over his teammate and it became clear that the race would boil down to a strategic battle.

Lap 39: Confirming a two-stop strategy, Raikkonen pits for another set of soft tyres. With Bottas out the way, he could start to use some of the Ferrari's underlying performance advantage over the Mercedes to whittle away at Hamilton's lead, which now stood at around nine second. Kimi Raikkonen finished in third, no mean feat given he had to complete the race - which took place at 33c - with his drink bottle disconnected and thus unable to take on any fluid.

With no rain forecast for Sunday's race, Vettel is hopeful that Ferrari's pace advantage in the dry will help him climb up the order. An early pit stop for Raikkonen on lap 14 triggered a response from Mercedes a lap later with Bottas, and now Vettel was in second behind Hamilton.

From hoping to attack Hamilton, Vettel now had to try to find a way past Bottas. He and Bottas then swapped best laps while Hamilton struggled for grip.

Hamilton took the win 17 seconds ahead of his Vettel - the flawless fillip to carry the British driver through the long wait for the Belgian Grand Prix on August 26. "He then aborted the lap". But it is Raikkonen, quickly catching his team-mate, who is the fastest driver on track. In that time, Hamilton had managed to pull a 17.1s lead over his title rival, skewing the result massively in Mercedes favour on the timescreens even though Ferrari had the fastest vehicle in clear air.
