That was good. After the Dortmund game [a 3-1 defeat] I didn't feel really good but I knew I don't have to make it bigger than it is.

United soon hit back though, with Andreas Pereira continuing his impressive pre-season form by curling in a sensational 25-yard free-kick to level the scoring within three minutes.

Mourinho could have done with Matic's defensive capabilities on Saturday as his side were well beaten by their fierce rivals in front of more than 100,000 spectators in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

"I think it is possible I am going to have one, that is possible, and that one, I gave a list to my club, with five names a few months ago and I wait to see if it's possible to have one of these players. I wouldn't come. I wouldn't spend my money to see these teams", Mourinho said.

But if Mourinho was anxious his young team might crumble after going a goal down, he didn't need to and five minutes later, Pereira curled a beautifully-executed free kick over the wall and beyond Kamil Grabara, in for the injured Lorius Karius.

Salah looked set to take the spot-kick he had won and called for the ball, but Mane instead chose to take over penalty duties.

Mourinho is already missing Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Luke Shaw, Sergio Romero, Diogo Dalot and Nemanja Matic through injury, while Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Marouane Fellaini, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo are not with the squad in the United States while they take time off following the World Cup.

Thoughts on Mourinho's comments? "They arrive here, and it was soccer, and they had to be in a soccer game". "I saw the movie".

Mourinho talked of "heritage", of the first four post-Sir Alex Ferguson seasons in which the Premier League's biggest club had finished no higher than fourth in the division.

Juan Mata had the ball in the net for United in the 20th minute but the midfielder strayed narrowly offside as he raced on to a superb long pass from Alexis Sanchez.

"It was unbelievable to play with this great team, you can see this team has awesome players, I feel good and I'm very happy".
