Yu Darvish is unlikely to return from the DL before mid-August and Tyler Chatwood's control problems persisted Thursday (he has 85 walks in 94 innings this season). priority would be getting Luke Farrell out of the rotation and Hamels would be an upgrade there.

In 2015, Hamels threw a no-hitter against the Cubs on July 25th at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs are expected to pick up about $5 million of what's left on Hamels' contract for the remainder of this season, according to reports. That would help ease the burden on a rotation that features two 34-year-olds (Hamels and Jon Lester), a pitcher now on track to set a new career high in innings (Mike Montgomery), a guy who experienced shoulder fatigue right before the All-Star Break (Jose Quintana) and, of course, Chatwood and his mechanical issues that have seen him walk 85 batters in only 94 innings. The Cubs, however, don't appear to be discussing the possibility of taking on all of that almost $14MM commitment.

Last season the pitcher was 11-6 with a 4.20 ERA, which was preceded by an All-Star 2016 campaign where he was 15-5 with a 3.32 ERA. "He's a great competitor".

Hamels has pitched some big games against Joe Maddon's teams, including the 2008 World Series against Maddon's Tampa Bay Rays in which the southpaw allowed only 4 runs in 13 innings across 2 starts.

"It's always that chase for that World Series, you start realize how hard it is to achieve", Hamels said.

The Cubs are on top of the NL with a 60-42 record entering Friday night's game at St. Louis, but they haven't received much length from their starting pitching.

Butler, 27, has pitched to an 81 ERA+ across parts of five big-league seasons. He was activated from the 60-day disabled list Tuesday after being sidelined by a right groin strain.
