Iran's Rouhani warns Trump 'don't play with the lion's tail': agency

The 2015 agreement, between Iran and the US and other powers, had agreed to ease sanctions on Iran if the country reined in its nuclear program.

The sanctions are set to be reimposed November 4, and more than 50 global firms have said they will leave the Iranian market, Brian Hook, a State Department policy and planning director, said earlier this month. In May, Trump officially violated the seven-nation Iran nuclear accord, but Iran has worked in concert with European nations to keep the deal alive and has repeatedly stated that it is not developing nukes and has no desire to do so.

"Democracy will come to Iran when the people of Iran have their reckoning with their ruthless and incompetent rulers".

In a late-night Twitter rant, President Donald Trump issued an all-caps threat to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

At the end of June, Rouhani said the regime would "bring America to its knees" and suggested that half of America's population is "ashamed of their government".

Sunday's direct threat against Mr. Trump is the second time in less than a month that the Islamic Republic's leader has gone on a tirade against the United States.

Separately, a top Iranian military commander warned that the Trump government might be preparing to invade Iran. Zarif said Iranian diplomats, by negotiating the nuclear deal, dealt a serious blow to what he called Israel's spreading of Iranophobia.

"Americans should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace", he added. He cautioned the USA against pursuing hostile policies against Tehran, saying that war with Iran would be the "mother of all wars".

Europe opposes the move and has vowed to find ways of maintaining its trade ties with Iran, which under the deal curbed its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of sanctions.

Iran's economy could take a huge hit due to increased sanctions.

Current and former USA officials said the campaign paints Iranian leaders in a harsh light, at times using information that is exaggerated or contradicts other official pronouncements, including comments by previous administrations.
