The interview came just days before the country goes to poll on July 25 and a few days after Reham Khan launched her controversial book full of sensational allegations of adultery, drug-taking and fathering children out of wedlock.

"Ikramullah Gandapur has been killed and we are conducting a post-mortem", said police official Zahoor Afridi. He died a short while later in a military hospital, Afridi said.

Sunday's attack targeted the vehicle of Ikramullah Gandapur, a candidate of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), or Pakistan Justice Movement, for the provisional legislative assembly in the city of Dera Ismail Khan, two police officials told Reuters.

His brother Israrullah Gandapur was also martyred in a suicide attack in D.I. Khan in October 2013. The Pakistan Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

The most fatal election-related attack took place in Mastung on July 13 during a rally organised by Mir Siraj Raisani - a BAP candidate for Mastung. He was elected through a by-election on the Dera Ismail Khan PK-67 seat, after it was vacated following the death of his brother Law Minister Israrulah Gandapur in a suicide attack.

Meanwhile, Akram Khan Durrani, former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister and a key leader of five-party religious alliance Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal, escaped an assassination attempt in Bannu district on Sunday. In an interview to UK's Daily Mail, the cricketer-turned-politician said,"Normally I don't say anything about Reham, but I will say this: I've made some mistakes in my life, but my second marriage has to be the biggest". No one was hurt.

Ikramullah Gandapur, a member of Mr Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, was contesting polls for the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provincial assembly when he was killed by a vehicle bomb.

Durrani survived a suicide attack earlier this month that killed four people.

Khan's chances of becoming the next Prime Minister have only brightened after former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was jailed on corruption charges last week.
