Senator McCain: Trump summit with Putin tragic mistake

Trump-Putin summit in Helsinki

Mr. Trump seemed to accept Putin's denial of interference, despite the US intelligence community's conclusion that Russian Federation did in fact meddle in the 2016 election.

Trump came under fire for his performance in the press conference, with critics on both sides of the political aisle slamming his handling of questions about alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Every major USA intelligence agency has concluded there was such interference by Russia during the election and the matter is the focus of a major federal investigation that has targeted not only Russians, but members of Trump's election campaign staff.

Putin said people should be grateful that the Russians and Americans are working together behind the scenes to organize such a summit and that the two leaders agree that terrorism is a greater threat to both nations than appearances show.

After the press conference, President Trump told CBS News that he basically believed what he said, that he doesn't think that Russian Federation meddled in our elections.

"I think the United States has been foolish", Trump said, to explain poor U.S. -Russia relationships.

Said Republican Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona: "I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression".

He went on to warn that Russian Federation remains capable of launching an interference campaign on 2018 midterm elections similar to what occurred in 2016 "we are just one click on a keyboard away from a similar situation repeating itself", he said. "I will say this, I don't see any reason why it would be", Trump said. He is right that the committee did not turn its communications system over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the agency investigated Russian hacking.

Trump tells Fox News' Sean Hannity that Putin "said as strongly as you can say it, they have no information on Trump".

The meeting came three days after the special counsel charged 12 Russian intelligence officers with election interference.

CNN is reporting that that statement wasn't cleared by the White House. There is simply no comparing the actions of the United States and Vladimir Putin.

Spokespeople for the Justice Department and Mueller declined to comment on Trump's comments or on Putin's purported offers for assistance.

Trump says he ran a "clean campaign" and he beat his Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton "easily".

Sen. John McCain, meanwhile, issued a statement saying the "damage inflicted by President Trump's naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is hard to calculate". Donald Trump is an American patriot.

"The damage inflicted by President Trumps naivete, egotism, false equivalence, and sympathy for autocrats is hard to calculate.

But our cooperation between the two countries has the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives", said Trump.
