Trump sets expectations low for Helsinki summit

The indictments, announced by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, were released just days before President Donald Trump was set to meet Russian leader Vladimir Putin in their first one-on-one summit meeting on July 16 in Helsinki. CBS television anchor Jeff Glor asked Trump if he planned to ask Putin to allow their extradition, but he said, "I hadn't thought of that". Russia's constitution prohibits extraditing its citizens to foreign countries.

"Heading to Helsinki, Finland - looking forward to meeting with President Putin tomorrow", Trump posted.

In advance of the meeting, a major concern in the United States is how forcefully Trump will confront Putin in the wake of new information released in Washington, DC this week over alleged Russian cyberattacks during the 2016 presidential vote.

Trump says in a television interview that he's going into the meeting with "low expectations".

Despite calls by top Democrats in Congress for Trump to cancel the meeting, Pompeo told reporters on his flight back from Mexico Friday night, "I think it's very important that they meet".

The charges say the Russian defendants, using a persona known as Guccifer 2.0, in August 2016 contacted a person in touch with the Trump campaign to offer help. "I believe that having a meeting with Chairman Kim was a good thing", he said of North Korea's supreme leader whom he met last month in Singapore.

"The administration has a pretty good policy towards Russian Federation, just the president doesn't agree with it", said Michael McFaul, a former USA ambassador to Russian Federation under Obama.

A US grand jury issued an indictment against the agents on Friday, charging them with hacking into email accounts controlled by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Jon Huntsman, the USA ambassador to Russian Federation, said in an interview with "Fox News Sunday" that it was critical that the parties not expect too much from the meeting.

He said Trump is going into the summit with a stronger hand because of the indictments.

Russian Federation would also take into consideration the effect of any possible "rapprochement" with the U.S. would have on its "allies and friends", Kortunov said, naming Iran, Syria, North Korea, Venezuela and China as examples of such countries.

Amid intensive diplomatic manoeuvring in the run-up to the summit, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a senior adviser of the Iranian leader held talks with Putin this week. "And he replied 'Because of the Mueller investigation.' No Mr. President, the reason why relations with Russian Federation are hard is because Russian Federation and its agents interfered dramatically in the 2016 elections". And they say that on the same day Mr. Trump, in a speech, urged Russia to find Ms. Clinton's missing emails, Russian hackers tried for the first time to break into email accounts used by her personal office.

As of Friday, the inquiry has indicted 32 people - mostly Russian nationals in absentia - as well as three companies and four former Trump advisers.

He also listed Russian Federation "in certain respects" and China on economic matters when asked to list America's top global foes.

"And I heard that they were trying, or people were trying, to hack into the RNC, too", Trump said. "So this is an attempt to see if we can defuse and take some of the drama and quite frankly some of the danger out of the relationship right now".

White House Correspondents' Association president Margaret Talev said in a statement that "saying a news organisation isn't real doesn't change the facts and won't stop us from doing our jobs".
