Chasing history Lewis Hamilton aiming for an unprecedented win no.6 for Britain at the British Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton shook off a first-lap collision which left him last and drove superbly to finish second in his home Grand Prix, as Ferrari archrival Sebastian Vettel won at Silverstone here yesterday.

While Lewis Hamilton backtracked on his criticism of Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on Monday, the Italian team's chief Maurizio Arrivabene launched a scathing attack on the Mercedes team. Bottas then let Hamilton past to challenge the German.

The appearance of the safety auto on the 33rd of 52 laps, after Sauber's Marcus Ericsson crashed, was greeted with a huge cheer from the 140,500 crowd and was just what Hamilton needed to close the gap.

Hamilton, who started in pole position after setting an electrifying track record to beat Vettel in qualifying, was going for a fifth straight victory in his home race and his sixth overall to beat the record of five he shares with Jim Clark and Prost. Only 14 cars finished the race, with both Sauber cars stopping early as well as Red Bull's Max Verstappen retiring after 46 laps.

Raikkonen ended up a close third, after incurring a 10-second penalty. Ferrari now lead the constructors' standings by 20 points, proving their greater consistency as a team over 10 of the 21 season races so far. However, he said that none have been forthcoming.

Raikkonen crossed the line ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who had led with only five laps of the race remaining. Later he was quick to say it wasn't an issue: "I don't have any concerns".

"I can not comment on the status of offers or discussions". Sometimes they want to teach us how to be gentlemen.

"Thank you for loving me for being me with all my flaws". But it has to be long-term.

"People expect you to get out of the vehicle and wave and smile and all that".

Lewis Hamilton has his own plans of bringing it home.

Tata Communications' F1 Innovation Prize will allow fans to present breakthrough ideas, with one overall victor rewarded with US$50,000 and the chance for their plan to be prototyped.

Mercedes AMG Petronas recently addressed the issues regarding their first lap collisions with Scuderia Ferrari in Formula 1. Always at his best when riled, Hamilton scythed his way through the pack with demonic intensity. Listening to the chatter between Hamilton and the pits, I felt that Lewis nearly dropped his chin after that incident.

"There will be other battles, where most likely Mercedes will win, but this is a lesson for us to stay classy - a thing that they haven't done today".

"We'll take it on the chin and keep pushing hard, because believe me I will not give up".

"It was a gamble that paid off for the Briton - winning him crucial points in his title fight with Vettel and limiting the damage that could have been caused after the first lap - but failed with Bottas, who ran out of tyres and was passed by Vettel, Hamilton and Raikkonen before the end of the race".

"The mind-set we have tried to create in the team is that failure is allowed", Wolff, 46, added.

Speaking about what had gone wrong for Hamilton at Silverstone, Shovlin said: "The simple answer is that we got some wheelspin".

"The vehicle performed well in the heat on the long runs and we hope we can achieve the same level of performance, or more, when it counts".
