President Donald Trump said Sunday afternoon he still had not made his final decision on a Supreme Court nominee, but anticipated finishing by Monday.

"If you're a conservative Republican, the four named - particularly Thomas Hardiman".

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania arrive on Air Force One, Sunday, July 8, 2018, in Andrews Air Force Base, Md., en route to Washington as they return from Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

Casey said he opposes the process by which Trump is picking his judges, which he described as choosing from a list of 25 nominees prepared by conservative organizations such as the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.

"This is a nightmare for red-state Democrats to oppose a highly qualified nominee, and all four of these people are highly qualified", noted Graham. "You can't go wrong".

Democrats are ramping up opposition to the president's eventual pick with a focus on the prospect that the candidate that's confirmed would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade, a decades-old ruling that struck down laws that criminalized or restricted access to abortions. Other Democrats who represent heavily Republican states will also be under pressure to support the nominee. "They're good judges. I think they'd be fine justices of the Supreme Court", Blunt said. All three voted to confirm Gorsuch and are up for re-election in states that Trump won handily.

Outside adviser Leonard Leo, now on leave from the Federalist Society, said on ABC's "This Week" on Sunday that this kind of jockeying is standard, noting that "every potential nominee before announcement gets concerns expressed about them by people who might ultimately support them".

McConnell reportedly told Trump that Kavanaugh, a former assistant and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush, has an extensive paper trail that could help Democrats prolong the nomination process. Susan Collins of ME, who has expressed disquiet about the nomination of a judge who might overturn Roe v. Wade.

"My goal, first and foremost, has always been to find people to serve on the court who believe in the Constitution as it's written, and that's really what drives the conservative legal movement", Leo said.

Track record: Barrett's recent ascension to the appeals court means she does not have the long, conservative record that lawmakers on the right find reassuring.

Since Kennedy declared his retirement almost two weeks ago, conservative groups have been gearing up for a battle of a lifetime as Democrats vow to do everything possible to block President Trump's choice. Kethledge, 51, is a judge for the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Kavanaugh is a former clerk to Anthony Kennedy, and was the principle author of the Ken Starr report on Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.

The New York Times on Sunday reported that the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, was strongly urging Trump to opt for either Hardiman or Kethledge on grounds that the other two might be impossible to get confirmed. I'll be deciding tonight or tomorrow sometime by 12 o'clock, and we're all gonna be meeting at 9 o'clock.
