The announcement comes the day after it was confirmed that Fernando Hierro - who managed the country through their disappointing World Cup campaign - will not continue as boss, and also stepped down from his role as Spain's sporting director.

His assistant, Hierro took over and guided Spain into the last 16, where they were knocked out on penalties by Russian Federation.

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is to be named as the new Spain coach, according to widespread reports in the Spanish media on Monday. Now Marca are reporting that Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales will recommend Luis Enrique at a board meeting today.

It emerged on Sunday that Rubiales was to put forward Lopetegui's successor to the RFEF's board on Monday and, shortly after doing so, Luis Enrique's appointment was made official.

Enrique, 48, will replace Lopetegui, who was sacked by Rubiales when the coach announced he had signed to take over at Real Madrid.

A team with a history of success, a talented squad and a distinctive style of playing, had just failed to win a trophy for the first time in six years.

He has been out of work since leaving Barça last summer but has since been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal before Unai Emery filled the vacancy left by Arsène Wenger.

Molina, 47, is a former Spanish national goalkeeper and also played for Atletico Madrid and Deportivo de la Coruna. This has resulted in a newfound apathy across the national team fanbase and Luis Enrique must find a way to bring back the trust and optimism of the old days.

Enrique's first game in charge will be a Uefa Nations League game away to England at Wembley Stadium on Sept 8.
