ESPN reports that Federer's deal with Uniqlo is worth more than $300 million guaranteed over 10 years.

While it may not seem like a big deal, it signalled the end of an nearly two-decade association with Nike, with whom Federer's trademark insignia has become synonymous with the company's tennis apparel.

The top seed, however, was wearing Nike footwear as Uniqlo does not manufacture shoes.

On Monday, he began his title defense in style after brushing aside Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

The company issued a statement minutes after the defending champion took to the court, saying Federer would be a global brand ambassador for the firm and would wear its outfits at all tournaments this year.

Signing Federer is a coup for Uniqlo, a Japanese brand that has made inroads in the United States since opening its first store in 2006.
