ESPN reports that Federer's deal with Uniqlo is worth more than $300 million guaranteed over 10 years.

While it may not seem like a big deal, it signalled the end of an nearly two-decade association with Nike, with whom Federer's trademark insignia has become synonymous with the company's tennis apparel.

The top seed, however, was wearing Nike footwear as Uniqlo does not manufacture shoes.

On Monday, he began his title defense in style after brushing aside Serbian Dusan Lajovic 6-1, 6-3, 6-4 in the first round.

The company issued a statement minutes after the defending champion took to the court, saying Federer would be a global brand ambassador for the firm and would wear its outfits at all tournaments this year.

'Even for me a year ago even though I lost in the final of Queen's, I felt that I was playing great tennis and that helped me to continue the form here as the season is so short on grass and you have to peak at extremely well.

Federer's deal with Nike expired March 1.

36-year-old Federer's streak of 65 consecutive Grand Slam appearances came to an end in 2016 when he didn't play at the US Open as he called it a season after Wimbledon.

Nike still retains ownership of Federer's monogrammed RF line.

Signing Federer is a coup for Uniqlo, a Japanese brand that has made inroads in the United States since opening its first store in 2006. "After his match, Federer said Nike still owns his signature 'RF" mark, but he expects it to be transferred to him "at some point". It's also something that was very important for me, for the fans really.

"I hope rather sooner than later, that Nike can be nice and helpful in the process to bring it over to me", Federer said. She lost her footing and tumbled at one point. They are my initials.

The Williams siblings aren't playing doubles in this tournament, the way they did at Roland Garros, and that's a good thing for Mom: It gives her more time with her child. "It's very high. The grasscourt season is extremely short so you need to peak at the right time".

Despite the separation from Nike, Federer is still wearing personalised Nike shoes that include an updated logo just for the 2018 Wimbledon Championships.
