"I've heard nothing on that score". The U.S. spends about 3.5 per cent. "But we all need to take a bit of a breath here ... and hope the president is in a good mood when he goes to Brussels".

"You can't solve problems if you are not talking about them", he said. "Every one of our allies - 100 percent - are increasing defence spending".

Today, the alliance's bureaucrats and some member states spotlight a threat from Russian Federation as a reason for keeping the organization alive, along with a laundry list of "train and equip" missions.

"The overall theme of this summit is going to be NATO's strength and unity", Hutchinson said.

Trump will embark on a trip to Europe next Tuesday, which will include attending the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and a stop in the United Kingdom before arriving in Finland.

Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin will meet alone at the summit because the president decided that this is the right time for direct communication, said Mr. Huntsman.

Trump has talked about bringing US troops home from around the globe since he was on the campaign trail espousing a strategy he dubbed "America First" but he has yet to act.

"We're entering with our eyes wide open, but peace is always worth the effort", Huntsman said. "And you need to make sure that we're willing, on our side, to hold Russian Federation responsible for the many activities that they are responsible for, whether that is election meddling; malign activities throughout Europe, including the Balkans, U.K. and Brexit, France, and Italy, just to mention a few; and to hold them responsible for" the destabilizing use of social media.

Administration officials have also said that subjects discussed with Putin would include Syria, where the administration is looking for a political settlement that would allow the withdrawal of USA troops there.

"There are great concerns in the alliance about what agreements Trump and Putin could reach", Beyer told the Funke Mediengruppe newspapers in an interview published Saturday.

Huntsman said the president will bring up an array of malign activity in which Russian Federation has been engaged, including meddling in the 2016 presidential election. He knows the facts and the details and he's discussed it.

The two ambassadors laid out a preliminary schedule for Trump's travels.

On the issue of arms control, the official said the USA intends to raise Russian violations of the INF arms treaty during the meeting and discuss the fate of arms control agreements between the two countries.

Her comments come just weeks after Trump charged that America is "the piggy bank that (NATO) likes to take from", and "we like to help out, but it helps them, they're in Europe".
