What is the corruption case against Nawaz Sharif?

"This is the beginning of a new Pakistan", Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan declared on Friday after the accountability court in Islamabad sentenced ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law retired Captain Safdar to 10, seven and one year in jail, respectively.

It was the latest blow to Sharif, just weeks ahead of the country's parliament elections later this month, and also the first verdict against the embattled former premier who has faced a string of trials since he was ousted from office by the Supreme Court past year for concealing assets overseas.

The court also gave Nawaz's daughter Maryam a seven-year prison sentence and a £2 million fine, rendering her disqualified to contest the 2018 general elections in Pakistan.

The agency had also named Sharif's sons - Hussain Nawaz and Hassan Nawaz - as accused in the three cases.

But he has kept de facto control of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party that he founded.

1993 - Removed as prime minister by Pakistan's president.

Nawaz Sharif, who is in London tending to his critically ill wife, is expected to appeal.

Journalists and activists have spoken of pressure by the military to censor positive coverage of the PML-N campaign amid allegations of a "silent coup".

1997- Elected prime minister for second time.

However, political analyst Qamar Cheema said that those thinking of capitalizing on the verdict should not underestimate thepopularity of the former ruling party among the masses.

2013 - Elected prime minister for third time.

April 4, 2016 - The leaked Panama Papers show involvement of Sharif's family in offshore companies including two used to buy luxury homes in London.

November 2, 2016 - Supreme Court agrees to set up a judicial commission to probe corruption allegations against Sharif, stemming from Panama Papers leaks. Imran Khan was adamant to pursue the case for which he held rallies and protests.

July 28, 2017 - Supreme Court declares Sharif disqualified from office for not declaring income from a company in United Arab Emirates, which was not in original Panama Papers revelations.

After much delay, the accountability court of Islamabad on Friday finally announced the verdict.
