We've fixed problems with vehicle, says Lewis Hamilton

Austrian GP victor Max Verstappen endured a frustrating day, stopping with a gearbox problem in the first practice, then crashing early in the second.

Watch Red Bull's Max Verstappen as he spins off in Practice Two at the British GP. "Not every decision can be the same, and I don't see the necessity to decide every time". Daniel Ricciardo (Red Bull) - 96 5.

"I used to remember playing with Ashley at school but just watching on the edge of your seat, the passion is insane for everyone that's watching their country play".

"Nobody is flawless. It would be boring if that was the case", added Hamilton, 33, whose new £120million contract with Mercedes will not be announced this weekend.

Immediately, both Ferrari and Red Bull responded with double pit-stops for their drivers while Mercedes left Hamilton out - a tactical oversight that was to prove costly.

"To announce the Formula One Australian Grand Prix date more than eight months out from the event is fantastic news and we hope this will encourage overseas and interstate visitors to plan for a lengthy visit to Melbourne and Victoria", said race CEO Andrew Westacott. Before being sidelined by a fuel pressure problem, he had already dropped from first to fourth when Mercedes failed to bring him in for an immediate pitstop after the virtual safety auto had been deployed. However, as Verstappen wasn't running one of his race gearboxes, there appears to be no threat of a grid penalty. The French driver did not take part in the second practice as his chassis was being replaced.

That compromised his race day and while he recovered to a podium position, taking back the lead in the standings in the wake of Lewis Hamilton's exit, Vettel expressed frustration over the situation.

That race in Spielberg saw their midfield rivals Force India enjoy their best result of the season, and they looked in good form on the opening day at Silverstone with Esteban Ocon in eighth and team mate Sergio Perez in P9. "It's a real privilege for me and I was just watching some of the replays of past year and if you look at the end when it shows you all of the positions and obviously to see the Union Jack up there is always a great feeling".

On lap 12, Nico Hulkenberg retired, his Renault engine spurting flames. Chief strategist James Vowles made a public apology to Hamilton over the radio during last Sunday's race. He did it in his first race for us in Barcelona, if you remember. I'm not going to be able to pass these guys.

It was clear that tyre wear was emerging as a critical factor. Hamilton reeled off two fastest laps, but it was asking too much as Mercedes' unbeaten four-year run in Austria, and his own race, came to an end when he pulled up on lap 64 after losing power.
