Southgate wants England to build on their progress in Russian Federation so far

England's penalty shootout record at World Cups is the worst of any country

England's penalty shootout record at World Cups is the worst of any country

Eric Dier scored the winning penalty at Moscow's Spartak Stadium after hero goalkeeper Jordan Pickford kept out Carlos Bacca's spotkick with a magnificent left-handed save.

"It was a top-class save, I'm surprised he could reach it given his height", Southgate said with a wry smile.

Former Sheffield United academy manager Ron Reid told the Star: "Kyle came in to see me one day and he was down".

"The negative thing for me was the fact..."

"Maybe it was a good height for the keeper if anything, it needed to be higher or lower but in penalties you can miss or there can be a good save but thankfully the lads dug me out", he added.

Henderson was anxious when his miss gave Colombia the advantage in a nerve-shredding conclusion to an absorbing encounter in Moscow.

"They showed (against Colombia) that in the end, even though they couldn't get the result in 90 minutes, they went through and that is what matters in these kinds of moments". "We had the belief and the resilience to get over the line". When it gets to these games, they're not always as honest as they might be about how fit they are.

"Today I saw a monumental robbery on the pitch. a fatal mistake for a whole country", he said of the incident that put England 1-0 ahead in the second half.

"I loved the last game, it was really exciting", the 35-year-old says. He said the Mackems have to stick together. He got a bit of criticism last week, undeservedly, so I am so happy for him to achieve that.

It was a fantastic response from the Everton man, who was criticised by pundits galore and 6ft 5in Courtois after Adnan Januzaj's victor in the final group game against Belgium. And for Eric to score the victor as well was brilliant.

But the English kept their cool and won a tight penalty shootout to head into the quarter finals.

Southgate also said he would not be able to trust his players' word to see if they're really fit, as everyone wants to play in games of such magnitude.

England fans will be hoping for a less intense game against Sweden, however, Xherdan Shaqiri and Granit Xhaka have sent them a warning.
