Hot, humid weather to continue through the week

However, daytime highs are still expected in the low thirties in the next two days.

Toronto's medial officer of health has also issued a heat warning for the city.

Dave Phillips tells CP24 that cooler temperatures should arrive in Toronto for the end of the week, bringing an end to what by that point will have been eight straight days of temperatures of 30 C or more.

Mylene Drouin, the Montreal Regional Director of Public Health, confirmed the deaths were due to heat.

As Glenn Frey once sang, the heat is on - and will stay on for Windsor-Essex until at least Thursday, according to Environment Canada.

An emergency coordination centre has been activated to supervise those measures and Montreal Mayor Valerie Plante has called on Montrealers to show solidarity with at-risk people.

Dr. David Kaiser, physician-manager at Montreal's public health authority, said officials aren't surprised by the number of deaths in the metropolis.

Slightly cooler conditions will likely arrive late Sunday as a cold front is expected to move through the region.

Sudbury has been under a heat warning since Friday.

If the temperature in fact hits 33 degrees on Wednesday, it would set a new record for Sudbury.

"Usually in a normal situation we have 10 deaths per day, so we're not in an excess of mortality", Drouin said.

"The most recent one was back in 2011", says Cheng.

In Toronto and Ottawa, temperatures have remained well above 30 C since Friday.

Last week, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for the GTA, calling it the "most significant heat event in the past few years". The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.
