A basketball World Cup qualifying game in Bulacan between Australia's Boomers and the Philippines came to an early end on Monday, after a massive brawl between players, staff and fans from both teams broke out on the court.

Caught up in the middle of it: the Milwaukee Bucks' and Australia's Thon Maker (No. 7 in yellow), who jumped into the center of the ruckus and at one point attempted a drop-knee.

Ultimately the referees ejected nine Philippine players, including Pogoy and Blatche, and four Australians - Maker, Goulding, Sobey and Kickert.

The game was stopped with two minutes left in the 3rd quarter with Fajardo and Norwood fouling out as FIBA rules state that at least two players should be inside the court for play to continue.

Chairs were even thrown from the bench as everyone got involved. It would not be surprising if Thon Maker ends up being punished by the National Basketball Association as a result of the incident.

The Australians later tweeted that everyone on their team was safe and well.

The victory means that Australia finishes on top of Asian Zone Group B with five wins from six matches though both teams had already progressed to the second stage of qualification.

The International Basketball Federation is expected to deliver punishments to the offending players.

A mass brawl erupted at an global basketball match between the Philippines and Australia on Monday, with players trading flying kicks and punches in extraordinary scenes which stunned onlookers. "We are extremely disappointed with what happened and our role in it", Moore said.

The sight of a seven footer flying through the air in such a manner was both terrifying and comical, and he was duly ejected for his weird act.

The chief executive of Basketball Australia, Anthony Moore, faced the media on Tuesday to express his regret at Australia's involvement in the "unacceptable" incident that has prompted questions over security for travelling teams.

"It's a pretty dark day", he said.
