Suarez vs. Ronaldo subplot of Uruguay-Portugal Round of 16 showdown

Uruguay's Diego Godin holds the key to locking out Cristiano Ronaldo

Edinson Cavani shatters Ronaldo's World Cup dream as Uruguay edge Portugal, 2-1.

"A rivalry with Ronaldo here (at the World Cup) and at a club level are two different things. And everybody will try and give their utmost tomorrow as to prevail".

"He defends, commands, scores goals, wins titles, and does not miss a game", said Diego Maradona recently.

In reaching the Round of 16, Portugal have improved on their showing at the 2014 World Cup where they were eliminated at the group stages.

And although Uruguay finally conceded a goal, it was the first this year in the team's seventh match. Everywhere he went, the Portugal great was hounded by two or three Uruguayan defenders. But he also admitted it'll be a group effort trying to slow down Portugal's star.

"He was injured. He felt pain", Tabarez said at a news conference.

The official needed no encouragement with that one, but Ronaldo made sure just in case. There is not a single player that can contain him there.

Godin, battle-hardened after years of working under Atletico coach Diego Simeone, has always been unapologetic about his country's uncompromising style.

Portugal manager, Fernando Santos is expected to keep forward, Ricardo Quaresma in the side at the expense of Bernardo Silva, meaning his side will be unchanged from the 1-1 draw with Iran.

Uruguay XI: Fernando Muslera; Martin Caceres, Jose Gimenez, Diego Godin, Diego Laxalt; Nahitan Nandez, Lucas Torreira, Matias Vecino; Rodrigo Bentancur; Edinson Cavani, Luis Suarez. "That means he has a very strong relationship with his players".

All five of Uruguay's goals at the 2018 World Cup have been scored from set-pieces (three from corners, one from a direct free-kick and one from an indirect free-kick).

With 27 meetings against Ronaldo in the bruising Spanish capital derby between Atletico and Real Madrid, winning eight times, drawing nine and losing 10, few players are better placed to come up with a strategy to shackle Ronaldo than Godin. Gimenez returned to training this week for Uruguay, but Tabarez wouldn't respond to questions about his selection in the team.
