Some believe losing to Belgium in their last Group G game could help England but Eriksson said Gareth Southgate's side had more chance of beating Brazil on the other side of the draw than Sweden, whom they could face in the quarter-finals if they beat Colombia in the round of 16.

Martinez's Belgium side ran out 1-0 winners against England in Kaliningrad on Thursday thanks to a wondrous Adnan Januzaj goal and despite making nine changes to their previous team that thrashed Tunisia 5-2 in Moscow.

England will carry high expectations into its match Tuesday against a talented Colombia team after essentially choosing that matchup by fielding a squad of reserves in its last group game against Belgium. So loads of different reasons, but the main one being the level of the opposition we are playing against the very best.

"We came here with a big squad and everyone is fighting for their place".

He said: "I genuinely feel I've been made a fool of because he changed the team so much".

"I've got a ticket for the final but I really don't think we will get there".

"I think it was a pretty even game".

"I think it's very risky", Alli told reporters on Saturday. "They are risky at set plays but we are as good as anybody at set plays", he added.

"For me, it's going to be a brilliant game to be involved in", said England coach Gareth Southgate.

While usually those to finish second in the group are handed the more hard fixtures, England have seemingly dodged several of the tournaments biggest bullets, with Belgium, France, Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay all being on the opposite side of the draw.

The striker headed to the World Cup on the back of his debut season with Manchester United. "If I'm on the pitch and if I've proved myself in training then I'm sure the lads and the manager might make me", he said. Had the game finished in a draw, England would have topped the group on the newly introduced fair play rule and set up a last-16 game with Japan. We want to get through Colombia.

"We know where we are, how immaculate we have to be to win matches against the very best teams".

Southgate saw his tame effort saved and England crashed out in the semi-finals with a side under Terry Venables that were good enough to land the trophy themselves.

But the consequences of failure are nowhere more devastating than at a World Cup, where two previous finals and five semi-finals have been decided by the gut-wrenching lottery of penalties.
