World Cup Group Tiebreaker and Scenario Breakdowns Mexico Needs a Result Argentina and Colombia Still Have Hope

Check out our permutations to see what the teams need to do to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Favourites: Russia 1st, Uruguay 2nd. South Korea are definitely gone.

Things get a little bit more complicated here. Russian Federation advanced from Group A as a runner-up, and will square off with Group B victor, Spain, on Saturday as well.

Portugal (+1, 4 goals) will go through with even a draw against Iran. Portugal take on Iran in the other match.

Eligible for the knockout stage are Spain, Portugal and Iran. If they win by the same score, or record identical draws, the disciplinary tiebreaker comes in, where Spain has one yellow card to Portugal's two, so Spain would top the group. Serbia could go through on goal difference with a draw if Switzerland lose by two or more.

They will win the group if they win and Spain do not, or if they draw and Spain lose.

France are through to the knockout round - a point against Denmark would see them finish as group winners. Can also advance with a Australia loss or draw against Peru.

Australia need to beat Peru, also at 2am, and hope Denmark lose.

El Tri only need a draw against Sweden on Wednesday to officially make it through, while a win will guarantee them top spot. A point would be enough if Iceland do not beat Croatia. Argentina had also topped their group, with three wins, to qualify with Nigeria in second place. While their match transpires, they'll be rooting for Croatia to defeat or tie Iceland. Wins for Iceland and Argentina means tiebreakers.

But big guns Brazil, Germany, Spain and Portugal have yet to secure their places in the knockout stages.

Group E and Group H are both in a three-country race.

A Swiss victory and Brazil draw is not out of the question, a scenario that would drop the five-time champions into second. If the sides finish with identical records then Switzerland would go through because they beat Serbia.

They will win the group if they win and Portugal do not. Mexico is battling Sweden and Germany for the group.

Mexico, on six points, are in the driving seat, with Germany and Sweden both on three. They will top the group if they beat Mexico and better Germany's result. In the case of teams finishing level on points, Federation Internationale de Football Association has put in place seven tie-breakers starting with goal difference and then the number of goals scored in all group matches. The first is, of course, the points scored by the teams.

Germany's dramatic victory over Sweden set the stage for a nail-biting finish to the group. South Korea can still edge through if they beat Germany and Mexico beat Sweden, and there's at least a two-goal margin in there somewhere.

Spain will also make the next round with a draw against a Moroccan side who are unlucky to find themselves with two narrow defeats in their opening matches.

England and Belgium are guaranteed to progress but their finishing positions will be decided by their meeting on Thursday.

Colombia will qualify with victory over Senegal.
