France rotate heavily against Denmark, Australia leave Tim Cahill on bench

Christian Eriksen played and Spurs teammate Hugo Lloris watched on as Denmark and France played out one of the less memorable games of Russian Federation 2018 so far but a 0-0 draw will have pleased both sides' coaches and fans.

A game neither France nor Denmark needed to win produced the World Cup's first 0-0 draw amid boos and whistles from fans on Tuesday.

Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen is aware that the pressure is on his native Denmark after they played out to a 1-1 draw against Australia in the World Cup on Thursday.

Les Bleus were already through to the knockout stages and the point, combined with Australia's defeat to Peru, ensured that Denmark would join them as runners-up.

Follow all the action with Sportsmail's TOM FARMERY ahead of kick-off at 3pm (BST). Events elsewhere in Group C made this game all but irrelevant.

It was the longest a World Cup had gone without a goalless draw since 1954, which had none.

In time added on, Nicolai Jorgensen was booked for bringing down Griezmann, and early in the second half France made the first change, bringing on Benjamin Mendy for Hernandez.

Steve Mandanda became France's oldest World Cup debutant and the goalkeeper nearly cost his side, spilling a long-range Eriksen free-kick before recovering to claim the loose ball ahead of lurking striker Andreas Cornelius. Midfielders Paul Pogba and Blaise Matuidi were obvious choices to sit after collecting yellow cards in a 1-0 win over Peru. We played to get the result and we did it.

"I do not want to speak about things personally, rather collectively", said the Sevilla midfielder.

Only in the final 20 minutes, when Fekir and Kylian Mbappe, came off the bench did France show more pace and direct intent.

Denmark has a tough defence anchored by veteran captain Simon Kjaer, and a high-class goalkeeper in Kasper Schmeichel. "If you'd read the whole article you would have seen I was comparing with the '98 team [which won the World Cup on home soil, ed.]". They will discover their opponents in the next round later on Tuesday, with Argentina needing to beat Nigeria in Saint Petersburg to stand a chance of qualifying.

After finishing second in Group C, Denmark will play their last-16 clash in Nizhny Novgorod on Sunday, likely against Croatia.
