The little girl, affectionately being called the first baby, was born at Auckland City Hospital weighing 7.3lb on Thursday.

In a statement, Ardern said, "I'm sure we're going through all of the emotions new parents go through, but at the same time feeling so grateful for all the kindness and best wishes from so many people".

Ms Ardern has become the first elected world leader to take maternity leave and for the next six weeks will only be consulting on major issues while her deputy, Winston Peters, handles day-to-day matters.

New Zealand has long had a progressive reputation and was the first country to give women the right to vote in 1893 and Ardern is the country's third female prime minister.

"The nurses described the baby as "very alert and one hungry baby", the spokesman added.

A spokesman for her office said, "Everyone is doing well if not a bit tired" after Ardern spent much of her first night as a mother feeding the newborn.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will spend a second night in hospital with her newborn daughter, her office said Friday.

The last leader to give birth while holding office was late Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, who in 1990 gave birth to Bakhtawar.

Tributes have come in from around the world, including from Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and from Google, which posted an image in the shape of a heart on its New Zealand homepage along with the message "Congratulations!"

Jennifer Curtin, a professor of politics at the University of Auckland, said there was symbolic importance in Ardern giving birth, in that it showed political parties around the world that it was fine to have younger women as candidates. "This is a sign of our maturity as a country and its acceptance that combining career and family is a choice which women are free to make", said Clark, who has been a mentor to Ardern. I think we are really privileged in New Zealand to have a prime minister who is going to know what that's like.

Former prime minister Helen Clark tweeted it was "a proud day for Jacinda & Clarke & for us all".

In a recent interview, Ms Ardern said she was bracing for life in a media bubble for her family.
