Mexico close in on last 16 with 2-1 South Korea win

Hernandez's goal was nothing less than Mexico, who beat defending champions Germany 1-0 last time out, deserved following another accomplished performance, with South Korea having rallied following Carlos Vela's 26th-minute penalty.

It's the 50th career worldwide goal for Hernandez, known as "Chicharito".

At the 66th minute Hirving Lozano, the hero in Mexico's win against Germany, dribbled half the length of the field with the ball at his feet, before dishing off to Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez who awkwardly volleyed the ball into a well defended net after switching to his "better foot".

As South Korea's sole threat, it was fitting that Tottenham striker Son gave his side fleeting hope in added time with a sublime, curling strike from 25 yards. Jang tried to block Andres Guardado's cross but inexplicably slid with his arm outstretched above him and the ball struck the defender's hand.

The goal came somewhat against the run of play as South Korea had been pressuring the Mexican end looking for an equalizer.

Lozano and Vela then took it in turns to try their luck, but the former saw his goal-bound effort blocked before the latter curled over the crossbar during an open period of the match.

A win gave Mexico six points in Group F - and it's looking likely that Mexico can emerge as the victor of the group and avoid a Round of 16 showdown with Brazil.

Mexico had their second of the game in the 66th minute, however, when Hernandez collected a super pass from Lozano before finishing low into the bottom corner of the net to register his 50th worldwide goal.

South Korea, beaten by a Sweden penalty in their first match, had their chances but again lacked cutting edge up front.

They have now gone eight World Cup matches without a win - going back to the group stages of 2010 - and face the daunting prospect of Germany in their final group game.

The 20-year-old Alvarez, one of Mexico's hottest prospects, replaces Hugo Ayala.

South Korea: Jo Hyeon-woo, Lee Yong, Son Heung-min, Ju Se-jong, Hwang Hee-chan, Kim Min-woo, Ki Sung-yueng, Kim Young-gwon, Jang Hyun-soo, Lee Jae-sung, Moon Seo-min.

Leading Group F on six points from two games, Mexico will be assured of a place in the knockout stage if Germany draw or lose against Sweden.
