GOP leaders ... are under no impression that they'll be able to secure the 218 votes needed in the next 24 hours to pass the measure, and they only agreed to the postponement under pressure from conservative members who are opposed to the legislation in the first place.

Rejection of both would represent an embarrassment for President Donald Trump, who had embraced them. Photos of these holding areas, many provided by the government, have been published and went some way towards Trump signing an executive order to end family separations.

Lawyers filed a memorandum to a settlement in California that governs how children are handled when they are caught crossing the USA border illegally.

"The President doesn't get any brownie points for moving from a policy of locking up kids and families separately to locking them up together. Republicans must get rid of the stupid Filibuster Rule-it is killing you!" the president tweeted Thursday morning.

Those moderate Republicans almost succeeded in garnering enough votes for what's called a "discharge petition" that would have forced votes on a number of different immigration proposals, including one that may have passed with a majority of Democrats and a small number of House Republicans.

Trump signed an executive order Wednesday aimed at preventing the separation of families that has resulted from his own policy. His order seemed to stem some of the urgency for Congress to act. But House GOP leaders still were pulling out the stops to bring reluctant Republicans on board in hopes of resolving broader immigration issues ahead of the November midterm election.

President Trump discusses immigration bill with members of Congress at the White House on June 20, 2018.

The outcome of the votes is uncertain.

Melania Trump's visit also came barely an hour before divided USA lawmakers were to begin voting on a pair of immigration bills in the House of Representatives, including one that directly addresses the family separation issue.

The New York Times reported that Gene Hamilton, a counsellor to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, mentioned an "implementation phase". "Those images affect everybody, but i have to say we have a double standard". "It won't be easy".

"Beyond this one problem of immigration- you can mention the word "comprehensive" or you don't have to use it", Mr. Trump said.

But Lou Barletta, who is running for Senate in Pennsylvania, told Mr Trump at the meeting he would have to remain a no vote for a bill that many conservatives consider to offer amnesty.

The House bill still under consideration is a compromise between conservatives and moderate Republicans.

A vote on the bill, which would fund a border wall while reducing legal migration, has been delayed to Friday. It is expected to fail. He also stressed that "we still have to maintain toughness in our country" and talked about the importance of "strong borders".

Trump's order also requests that the Defense Department make facilities available on military bases to house detained immigrant families or to construct new facilities. The U.S.in the last six weeks has separated more than 2,300 young children from their families at the U.S. -Mexico border.

USA officials have expressed mixed messages about what happens next to at least 2,300 children taken from their parents after illegally crossing the border since 5 May. It was dead this week, despite outcry over the border crisis caused by the Trump administration's family separation policy.

It was dead earlier this month, after an insurgent effort to force a vote on a bipartisan bill in the House failed.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi strongly criticized the GOP immigration bills, calling them "anti-family" while charging they "perpetuate" child detention.

In the House, moderate Republicans forced the immigration debate to the fore by threatening to use a rare procedure to demand a vote.
