Nikki Haley says the United States has pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

They said their calls for change, notably to fix "hypocrisy" and "unrelenting bias" against Israel were ignored.

"This decision, in many respects, has been decades in the making", Bolton said. The U.S. Ambassador to the U.N., Nikki Haley, announced the pullout Tuesday, criticizing the council for "its chronic bias against Israel" and pointing out that it includes accused human rights abusers such as China, Cuba, Venezuela and Congo.

"You know, we're actually self-governing in this country".

On Tuesday, US Ambassador to the United Nations in New York Nikki Haley privately told Guterres that the US planed to withdraw from the council.

The U.S. national security adviser has defended the Trump administration's decision to pull out of the United Nations Human Rights Council, saying "we don't need advice by the U.N. or other global bodies on how to govern ourselves".

The council is a waste of time and money but does the former number three at the UN Helen Clark, who not surprisingly lost the vote to become the boss on a reform ticket, have a point?

It also comes as the US faces intense criticism for detaining children separated from their immigrant parents at the US-Mexico border.

"The Human Rights Council enables abuses by absolving wrongdoers through silence and falsely condemning those that committed no offence", Pompeo said. She had been threatening the pull-out since previous year unless the council made changes advocated by the U.S.

The US has long had a conflicted relationship with the UNHRC and says it has to be reformed. US leaves UN Human Rights Council US pulls out of UN Human Rights Council US plans to withdraw from UN Human Rights Council: report MORE announced the USA would withdraw from the council, saying that the worldwide body was "not worthy of its name".

While Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the USA withdrawal, experts and diplomats have noted that without US pushback, resolutions approving investigations of Israel's conduct in the Occupied Palestinian Territories could multiply. Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that "America First does not mean America Alone", the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office.

China, Britain and the European Union lamented on Wednesday Washington's decision to withdraw from the United Nations. The U.S. delegation's seat was empty and the nameplate removed at the end of the day.

Opposition to the decision from human rights advocates was swift.

John Bolton told Fox News on Wednesday the decision was made by President Donald Trump weeks ago and had nothing to do with high commissioner's criticism of the US immigration policies.

Added Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch: "All Trump seems to care about is defending Israel". "A mere look around the world today demonstrates that the council has failed in its stated objectives".

And the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank close to the Trump administration, defended the move, calling the council "notably incurious about the human rights situations in some of the world's most oppressive countries".

Now the Trump administration has formally sent notification of its decision, the U.N. General Assembly will organize elections for a replacement to assume the USA term through 2019. In fact, that's why many of them run for a seat on the Human Rights Council in the first place: "to protect themselves from scrutiny", Haley said.
