She said the government has high standards for detention centers and the children are well cared for, stressing that Congress needs to plug loopholes in the law so families can stay together. "That's traumatizing to the children who are innocent victims, and it is contrary to our values in this country".

Sunday, Bush spoke out against the Trump Administration's policy of separating immigrant families, which immediately received an outpouring of bipartisan dissent.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush also criticised what's going on in a newspaper article. "If he won't, Congress must act", said Ms. Feinstein, who has written a bill that would ban most family separations.

According to Reuters, 1,995 children have been separated from 1,940 adults at the US-Mexico border between April 19 and May 31 following the implementation of stricter border enforcement policies by the Trump administration.

The families were all separated so the parents could be criminally prosecuted, said a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, who declined to be named, on a call with Reuters.

Then followed Laura Bush, a Republican and the wife of former president George W Bush, who condemned the move as "immoral" and "reminiscent of the internment camps for USA citizens and noncitizens of Japanese descent during World War II". Asked whether there was any daylight between the president and first lady on the issue of family separation, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders chose to instead address the administration's dispute with Democrats.

U.S. President Donald Trump blasted the German government's internal conflict over immigration Monday, claiming on Twitter that the country's citizens are "turning against" their political leaders.

"I live in a border state", she wrote in a Washington Post op-ed on Father's Day.

"There are other ways to negotiate between Republicans and Democrats".

The vehicle carrying 14 people went out of control at more than 100 miles per hour and overturned on Texas Highway 85, ejecting most of the occupants, Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd said.

"The increasing number of children being ripped away from their parents is sickening", said Democratic Senator Michael Bennet.

First Lady Melania Trump has also issued a comment on the policy.

The separations stem from a policy that turns all cases of people trying to enter the country illegally over for criminal prosecution.

"Separating families is not mandated by law at all", Clinton said.

The House proposals face broad opposition from Democrats, and even if a bill does pass, the closely divided Senate seems unlikely to go along.

Conway also blamed the Democrats, saying if there are serious about overhauling the immigration system, "they'll come together again and try to close these loopholes and get real immigration reform".

A group of congressional lawmakers on Sunday visited an old warehouse in South Texas where hundreds of children are being held in cages created by metal fencing.
