She said the government has high standards for detention centers and the children are well cared for, stressing that Congress needs to plug loopholes in the law so families can stay together. "That's traumatizing to the children who are innocent victims, and it is contrary to our values in this country".

Sunday, Bush spoke out against the Trump Administration's policy of separating immigrant families, which immediately received an outpouring of bipartisan dissent.

Former First Lady Barbara Bush also criticised what's going on in a newspaper article. "If he won't, Congress must act", said Ms. Feinstein, who has written a bill that would ban most family separations.

The House proposals face broad opposition from Democrats, and even if a bill does pass, the closely divided Senate seems unlikely to go along.

Conway also blamed the Democrats, saying if there are serious about overhauling the immigration system, "they'll come together again and try to close these loopholes and get real immigration reform".

A group of congressional lawmakers on Sunday visited an old warehouse in South Texas where hundreds of children are being held in cages created by metal fencing.
