Trump tweets that firing James Comey was a ‘great service’

The president was responding to questions about the 568-page report released Thursday by the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general (IG) concerning the 2016 FBI investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and address to conduct official USA diplomatic business. But it found no evidence that Comey showed political bias in his oversight of the investigation. Though there's no evidence the device was put on the back-burner to protect Clinton, the watchdog said it could not be certain that Strzok's decision to prioritize the Russian Federation probe over examining the Weiner laptop was "free from bias", especially because Strzok was exchanging anti-Trump text messages at the time.

"We found no evidence that the conclusions by the prosecutors were affected by bias or other improper considerations; rather, we determined that they were based on the prosecutors' assessment of the facts, the law and past department practice", the report said.

In his first public comments on the report, Trump said in a pair of tweets early Friday that he had done "a great service" for the American people by firing Comey previous year. Referring to the Mueller investigation, he stated the high-ranking FBI agent and former FBI attorney "started the disgraceful Witch Hunt against so many innocent people".

Comey, however, said he acted appropriately in his handling of the Clinton email investigation.

The inspector general's report said that exchange "is not only indicative of a biased state of mind but, even more seriously, implies a willingness to take official action to impact the presidential candidate's electoral prospects".

"Among the text exchanges that have been made public is one from August 2016 in which Page said, "(Trump's) not ever going to become president, right? After praising his supporters, the commander-in-chief alleged that the sordid nature of the Federal Bureau of Investigation under former Director James Comey will mark a "dark and unsafe period in American history".

"But my emails", Clinton said, reacting in a three-word tweet.

Onetime FBI attorney Lisa Page and current special agent Peter Strzok did not intend to leave for posterity a rich account of their thoughts and feelings as they lived through the events of 2016 - but that is what they have done.

But others, though critical of Comey, believed the report actually helps fortify the Department of Justice against Trump's attacks.

President Donald Trump applauded a review of how the FBI investigated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton Friday while calling its conclusion flawed. "And I think that the Mueller investigation has been totally discredited". The report says the attorney left Mueller's investigation in late February 2018, shortly after the inspector general provided Mueller with some of the instant messages they had discovered.

On Friday, Trump said, "If you look at - the head investigator is saying, 'We have to stop Trump from becoming president.' Well, Trump became president". "So I guess, it was interesting, it was a pretty good report, and then I say the IG blew it at the very end", Trump told Fox News co-host Steve Doocy of "Fox and Friends" during an impromptu interview on the north lawn of the White House.
