Philippe Coutinho stunner cancelled by Steven Zuber as Brazil held 1-1

Philippe Coutinho gave Brazil the lead in the 20th minute with a volley that bounced in off the right post.

They foolishly offered him the chance to demonstrate his most spectacular quality, however, when a cross from Marcelo was cleared into the path of the Barcelona midfielder, who wrapped his right foot around the ball and delivered an irresistible finish to break the deadlock in the 20th minute.

A second-half header from Steven Zuber cancelled out a sensational early goal from Philippe Coutinho as Switzerland and Brazil drew 1-1 in a tight Group E World Cup opener on Sunday.

Since Tite took over, Brazil have lost only once in 21 matches and was the first of 31 teams to qualify for the World Cup in Russian Federation. Coutinho and Neymar combined on the left channel, with the latter sending in a cross for Paulinho.

But Brazil ignominiously bowed out of the World Cup four years ago - losing to Germany 7-1 in the semifinals and falling 3-0 to the Netherlands in the third-place game.

Mexican referee Cesar Ramos dismissed complaints that Zuber had shoved defender Miranda before getting to the corner from Xherdan Shaqiri.

Switzerland have lost only one of their last 23 matches (W16 D6), a 2-0 defeat to Portugal in October 2017. They didn't look dominant during this match - and the talismanic Neymar didn't look entirely fit most of the time.

Valon Behrami became the first Swiss player to appear in four different World Cup finals - he also appeared in 2006, 2010 and 2014. At times, he linked encouragingly with Neymar, which bodes well for the remainder of the tournament.
