They would be punished moments later after France were awarded a controversial penalty when Antoine Griezmann was tackled by Josh Risdon bearing down on a through ball.

Just 4 minutes later, however, France's Samuel Umtiti made a weird mistake, his flailing arm making contact with a high cross from Aaron Mooy, forcing the referee to award another penalty, which Australian captain Mile Jedinak converted.

France coach Didier Deschamps made a double change as Olivier Giroud and Nabil Fekir came on for Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele, Australia replacing Tom Rogic with fellow midfielder Jackson Irvine soon afterwards.

Griezmann thumped the ball into the right corner past Australia keeper Mathew Ryan, triggering cheers from travelling French fans but jeers from the Australians at Kazan Arena.

The Socceroos have been undone by misfortune against a somewhat underwhelming French outfit, losing their first game of the 2018 World Cup 2-1. There were many situations in which France did not know what to do anymore.

Uruguayan referee Andres Cunha did not award a penalty but after viewing the VAR footage, ruled it was a spot-kick and Griezmann gave France a 1-0 lead.

Defender Risdon perhaps had reason to dispute the decision, before Griezmann seized the opportunity, whipping the ball to Ryan's left to claim his 21st global goal.

The Barcelona centre-back inexplicably jutted out a hand to steer a Aaron Mooy's deep cross away from the six-yard box, thus generously affording Australia a penalty of their very own...

Pogba post the win revealed that he was left impressed by the kind of support the Aussies received in Russian Federation and that he felt like, France were playing in Australia.

Paul Pogba later scored the winning goal in the 81st minute, and goal-line technology was used to confirm the ball had crossed the line after bouncing down off the crossbar. I can not blame any of my players.

France's talent will be enough to get them through their group and may even carry them to the quarter-finals, but their lack of cohesion is a big problem and one that may be hard to resolve before the end of the tournament.

"But. he's also a human being and everybody makes mistakes".

A World Cup has however ensured football comfortably beat a number of other sports on Saturday night.

"We have not played a great game", Deschamps admitted.

"No-one expected we could play like this against France but I think there were a lot of moments when they didn't know what to do anymore so that's a big compliment for us".

Frank Leboeuf joins the ESPN FC crew to talk about France's underwhelming display and what must be done to play to their potential.

"I did stress to make sure you feel that disappointment, but use it as fuel to make sure that we do the business in the coming games".
