Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell fighting to make cut

Phil Mickelson, approaching 48 and looking for glory in the twilight of his career; Rory McIlroy, 29 and cruising for additional hardware in the throes of his prime; and Jordan Spieth, at 24 enticing everyone with visions of a long, dominant future to follow his torrid start.

Fourteen-time major victor Woods (72) and McIlroy (70) both closed on 10 over while Spieth (71) finished with successive bogeys to miss out by one shot on nine over. He finished the hole with a double-bogey for the day, five over for the two days, which is really the difference between him playing the weekend or not.

While pars are always at a premium under the USGA's watchful eye, Woods is in the midst of a run of 11 straight rounds without breaking par that dates back to the second round at Olympic in 2012.

Things looked promising when Woods found the fairway at the first, but his second shot rolled through the green and he would need three shots to reach the elevated green, finally two-putting for a seven.

He played the next 11 holes in level par before making his move with three birdies in four holes.

His superior ball-striking from Memorial seemed to carry over somewhat to Shinnecock, as his driver was pristine for much of the opening round.

Let me preface this by saying that Tiger Woods isn't done.

Hoffman was the only other player under par until he missed the 18th fairway and had to chop it down the fairway and make a 5-foot putt to escape with bogey. If I would have putted like I did at the beginning of the year with this ball striking, that would be ideal.

He added: "If you had offered me one over and tied fourth at the start of the week I would have taken it".

No surprise here. The 14th is the longest par 4, and just 70 yards shorter than one of the two par 5s on the course.

Woods did play the next 10 holes in even par - with one birdie and one bogey.

"I've never seen him more focused and in control than he is right now", said Austin Johnson. But make no mistake: This was classic US Open carnage, with Shinnecock Hills's hills laughing all the way to the clubhouse at last year's host Erin Hills's hills, which proved no match for champion Brooks Koepka or the 30 fellow golfers under par when his record-tying 16-under win was complete. "My game plan was not to make any 'others, ' and I made three of them".

"I'm not very happy the way I played and the way I putted", Woods said, via ESPN.com's Bob Harig.

Four-time major champion McIlroy, who did not speak to the media after his first round of 10-over 80 conceded he had been "thrown off" by the wind on Thursday. However mundane his first nine was, his second nine was quite the opposite.

"It would have had to have been eight years ago or more, " he said.

Rose also was under par until closing with successive bogeys.
