Korea media says abductions of Japan's nationals "resolved"

"It's a common courtesy when a military official from another government salutes, that you return that", presidential spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters two days after Trump returned from his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un. "He speaks and his people sit up in attention".

Trump, speaking Friday with reporters gathered on the North Lawn after his surprise appearance on Fox, offered new insight into his relationship with the recluse leader.

The U.S. says tough sanctions would remain on North Korea until its complete denuclearization, apparently contradicting the North's view that the process agreed at this week's summit would be phased and reciprocal.

In also expressing a desire to eventually remove the 28,500 American troops stationed on the peninsula, Mr Trump's shift could overturn longstanding United States policy in Asia and has received a cool reception from Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop.

Kim has not yet taken any concrete step to dismantle his nuclear programs. In May, after North Korea criticised his vice-president, Mike Pence, Trump said the summit was cancelled.

But Trump seems keen to claim a quick diplomatic victory and the halt to major USA military exercises on the peninsula is a significant concession to both Pyongyang and Washington's rival China.

The Russian leader had a meeting with North Korean official Kim Yong Nam on Thursday, at which he handed over an invitation for Mr Kim to visit later in 2018.

"The nature of the tasks was not to be resolved at once", Kim told reporters after the meeting.

North Korean officials responded with their own statement saying they were still willing to meet with the USA to "resolve issues anytime and in any format". So the only thing I did was I met.

"We have a really great relationship for the first time ever", Trump told Doocy. "There was no obstruction", Mr. Trump claimed. However, Trump's critics have called the US' suspension of military exercises with South Korea in exchange for a vague commitment by Kim to denuclearize an extreme concession to the dictator. It's my term. I said I'd like to halt it, because it's bad to be negotiating and doing it.

"Parroting Chinese and North Korean propaganda by saying joint exercises are "provocative" undermines our security and alliances".

He said he "spoke with China" about the summit and "they're very happy", although he added that "they may not be as happy today" after the USA approved a plan to impose tariffs on $50 billion of imports from China.

Pyongyang typically reacts furiously. Following drills a year ago, the North fired ballistic missiles over Japan, triggering global alarm and ratcheting up a diplomatic war of words between Trump and Kim. Trump released a letter addressed to Kim, citing what he described as Pyongyang's "tremendous anger and open hostility" toward the US.

"He's the head of the country - and he's the strong head, don't let anyone think anything different", Trump said during the interview.

'War games'Asked about North Korean human rights abuses, Trump said "I can't speak to that".
