China wants UN Security Council to lift sanctions on North Korea

China suggested the United Nations Security Council suspend or lift sanctions against North Korea on Tuesday just hours after President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un agreed to work to denuclearize the peninsula, according to a report.

"Everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office", Trump tweeted.

Trump was also criticized for giving too many concessions to North Korea, including failing to acknowledge the human rights crimes alleged against Kim, and pledging to end the "war games", or the joint military exercises conducted with a long-standing ally of the United States, South Korea.

The two leaders signed a vague four-point statement in which North Korea reaffirmed its commitment to work toward "complete denuclearization" but the promise came without a timetable or mention of any verification of the North's progress.

On Monday, the North Korean state-run news agency KCNA said that both leaders would discuss establishment of a new relationship between North Korea and the U.S. and the structure of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula.

Moon played a mediator role between Kim and Trump, having already held two summits with Kim in April and May.

The president tweeted after returning from his Singapore summit that "the Fake News, especially NBC and CNN", are "fighting hard to downplay the deal with North Korea".

A joint statement issued after the first-ever U.S.

Trump's Twitter storyline, however, went like this: "Before taking office people were assuming that we were going to War with North Korea".

Trump and Kim today had a comprehensive, in-depth, and honest exchange of opinions on issues related to establishing "new" relations between the two countries and the building of a lasting and robust peace regime on the Korean Peninsula, according to a joint statement signed by them.

"Kim Jong Un and Trump had the shared recognition to the effect that it is important to abide by the principle of step-by-step and simultaneous action in achieving peace, stability and denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula", KCNA said.

A day before the Singapore summit, Pompeo said at a press briefing that the "ultimate" USA objective remains "the complete, and verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula". Official media reported that Trump had accepted an invitation during Tuesday's summit to visit the North. Critics said the encounter had produced a document short on details about the key issue of Pyongyang's atomic weapons.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Vladimir Putin has said the Russian president welcomes the outcome of the talks with Mr Kim. Japan and South Korea have large USA military presences in their countries.

"North Korea has committed to a complete denuclearisation".

The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the U.S. would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea.
