Sony Responds To Fortnite Backlash Regarding Cross-Play Restrictions On PS4

Not allowing me to sign-in to Fortnite Switch with my Epic account because it's linked to PS4 is tone deaf and points more to fear than market dominance. The slightly disappointing news is that it doesn't appear that Fortnite for Switch will contain any Nintendo-specific content.

Soon after that was discovered, gamers took to Twitter and forums across the Internet to criticize Sony's move.

An unexpected bump in the road came for fans that downloaded the free to play version of Fortnite. However, the visuals have been stripped down to run smoother on the Switch's Tegra X1 chip.

Fortnite is available now in early access on Nintendo Switch, iOS PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Not being able to play with PS4 owners is a bit of a bummer. According to The Verge, Sony hasn't let its PlayStation 4 gamers compete against Switch players. In fact, you can't even log in with a PS4 account. And has even caused the company's share price to fall.

Although the developer behind the most popular game in the world right now, Epic Games, notes that cross-play is simply a matter of flicking a switch - Sony haven't budged in the slightest. This means that a Fortnite account, once logged-in on a PlayStation 4 is then forever tied to that platform. Bihldorff explains that in order to really see the new engine at work you need to look at the little nuances, like the lighting in a certain stage or character interaction differences. He backs up the "tens of thousands of changes" comment from Sakurai. It doesn't name Sony specifically, but we know that's who's behind the block. Moreover, Sony has blocked account progression syncing between devices.

Sony hasn't claimed direct responsibility for the issue, but Xbox chief Phil Spencer has expressed a desire for cross-play between systems. Recently, the game has been announced for the Switch platform, had a crossover with one of the largest movie franchises of all time, and has been announced to be one of the highest grossing games of all time, amassing $300 million in one month alone. The Switch rarely has the same titles as the more powerful consoles, and its portability offers a very different gaming experience.

We doubt this will appease furious Fortnite fans who are lambasting Sony over its unwillingness to partake in cross-play with other consoles.
