It means Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have each won one of the last three races and Wolff expects the pendulum between the top three teams to keep swinging back and forth.

Lewis Hamilton has topped the grid on six occasions in Montreal, but he'll start from fourth place on Sunday.

Cue some serious work overnight, both in Montreal and at Ferrari's Maranello base with reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi putting in the miles in the simulator.

But the four-time world champion said it could have been worse.

The Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas will also start in the front row.

"I was just anxious, I told them also on the last lap, then people don't jump on the track, waving flags and celebrating, because we're still going at full pace".

It was a short day for the lone Canadian on the track as Lance Stroll's Williams punctured a tire only a quarter of the way through the first lap into the race, causing the Montreal driver to slide across the crack and ram New Zealander Brendon Hartley of Toro Rosso into a wall. "How can I be better?' I am going to keep doing that".

"I think this was the maximum. was about hundredths of a second, so maybe from pole it could have been different, but from P2 we maxed out".

"That's why I am just taking this one". I think they peaked a bit early, but majority are men so it might happen. Bottas also overtook Ricciardo for third in the championship, with 86 points to Ricciardo's 84. Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen crossed the line 8.3 seconds after Vettel to claim the third spot on the podium.

He is, however, confident that he can overturn that, whether it be through Mercedes getting it right or Ferrari faltering.

"It was definitely a bit more fun when you had more engines I would say".

It was left to Bottas to chase Vettel, who made a clean getaway from the start, with Verstappen nearly passing the Finn before the order settled down.

"I think we've got potential in this vehicle and when you guys are writing your stories, I think a year ago there was "oh, Mercedes have the best car" and all those different things, but ultimately I think we did the better job", he added.

German Nico Hulkenberg came home seventh ahead of his Renault team-mate Spaniard Carlos Sainz, Frenchman Esteban Ocon of Force India and Monegasque Charles Leclerc of Sauber. Both cars were badly damaged but the drivers escaped uninjured.

"We've got to keep working, which I know the guys are".

Stroll, 19, was in is second Canadian GP.

Fernando Alonso would have hoped to make Q3 in his 300th Grand Prix weekend, but he had to settle for P14 after finishing Q2 more than a second off the pace.
