For reference, Forbes took all earnings from an athlete's "work" - salary, tournament winnings, etc. - and added in outside income directly related to the athlete's status. That list was topped by Mumbai Indians IPL team owner Mukesh Ambani, whose $40.1bn (£29.9bn) fortune put him $2bn ahead of former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who owns the Los Angeles Clippers. The four-time major victor has banked $37.5m over the past year, including $3.7m in on-course earnings and $34m in endorsements.

Floyd Mayweather has admitted that he is not now considering coming out of retirement to fight in the UFC, however, the American hasn't ruled out the idea, according to TMZ Sports, cited by Bleacher Report. The top golfers behind Woods were Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas.

Perhaps the biggest surprise about the list is that it does not contain a single woman.

The list included athletes from 22 countries in 11 sports. There are five golfers in the list, 18 American footballers, 14 baseball players, nine footballers, four boxers, four tennis players, three racing drivers, and one each from cricket (Virat Kohli), mixed-martial arts (McGregor) and athletics (Usain Bolt).
