A Palestinian man was shot dead for throwing a stone at an Israeli soldier during a confrontation in the village of Nabi Saleh in the West Bank.

"The soldier who was hit by the rock fired towards the Palestinian, who was injured and medically treated by IDF (Israeli army) troops at the scene", the spokesperson said.

Israel's killing of unarmed Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza has earned it severe criticism in recent months.

During a second, open meeting, Kobi Eliraz, a senior aide to Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman, said that Israeli officials are "familiar with the attempt to takeover lands, which is directed by the Palestinian Authority". "The incident will be investigated".

Israeli forces searched two homes during the raid, including one belonging to Adli Farh al-Rimawi and and the other to Awad Jaber al-Rimawi.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces raided a Bethlehem neighborhood and Dheisheh refugee camp, south of the city, detaining three Palestinians.

Demonstrators have also called for the "right of return" to lost ancestral homes in what is now Israel. The spokesman said that he was "given medical treatment at the scene", but did not survive.

Israel came under withering worldwide criticism over the high number of deaths as its troops faced off along the border, including from allies.

Israel captured east Jerusalem in the 1967 Mideast war and annexed it to its capital, a move not recognized by most of the global community.

Demonstrators also chanted anti-American slogans to condemn the US decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem. The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in east Jerusalem, the third holiest site in Islam, is built on the spot where tradition says the Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven.
